Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe - Arlington, VA - A Frequent DC area stop!

Went to Heidelberg over the holidays (actually twice! 😜) while visiting my family in McLean. Was introduced to this bakery/pastry shop a few years ago by my sister and fellow baked goods aficionado G. She had moved into the area and got my nephew's birthday party cupcakes there. Since then, I have stopped there on almost every visit to G's. Heidelberg is a German bakery with a wide variety of donuts, pastries, cakes/cupcakes, breads and even has a small deli and gourmet foods section. In fact, they usually have a daily special of a sausage sandwich with beverage or slice of cake included. Haven't tried one but it does look tasty and have seen many people partake of this. There's a small seating area to enjoy your food. Owing to their German heritage they also have a few varieties of soft pretzels which are always fresh and very good! Natale's Bakery Summit, NJ - another all-time favorite!

Visited Natale's in Summit, NJ which has been a favorite stop for many years. The bakery is located near one of my largest customers over the years so have had the pleasure of enjoying many different items. Their signature dessert is the "Philly Fluff" cake, which is a round and I would describe as a type of pound cake with a very moist and light texture dusted with powdered sugar. Think it's called Philly Fluff in part because they use Philly Cream Cheese in the batter, though you don't taste cream cheese per se. It's probably the most popular thing I've brought in to my customers so always to try to stop there when passing by, just keep in mind they're closed on Mondays. They sell lots of them every day and you'll see boxes of them stacked up behind the cases for sale. Gencarelli's Bakery - Wayne, NJ

Went to Gencarelli's in Wayne NJ this week when visiting customers in the area. Have been to this bakery many times in the past, as well as their other location in Bloomfield NJ. It's been a little while as I don't get to the area as much as in the past. This is a reliable old school Italian bakery with a wide assortment of sweets and bread & rolls. Some of my regular "go-to" items include donuts, crumb buns, and brownies. They have a nice variety of each, including 3-4 types of brownies and 3 types of crumb buns. My favorites are the peanut butter brownies and iced crumb buns, as well as the pretzel and crumb cake donuts. Although I didn't get any this trip, their round layer cakes and pies are very good and have a wide range of choices. There's white and chocolate buttercream and fudge frosting and fillings varieties coupled with yellow and chocolate cake choices to give many different flavor combinations.
