Had an extra day in Pittsburgh last weekend so got a chance to do a little bakery research! 😏
Visited Five Points Artisan Bakeshop in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood and was not disappointed. This is a relatively small bakery - but they are expanding next door soon and adding a cafe, so business must be good. Their main focus seems to be "European Style" breads but the pastries and cookies were excellent as well.
My daughter wanted a whole grain bread which they had sold out of just before I got there but they recommended the sunflower flax seed loaf which I got. She reported that her and her friends tore into it while studying and it went over very well. Bought an interesting individual bread called a "Seeded Fougasse", which they described as the same dough as a baguette with sesame and poppy seeds in a rectangular slotted shape (see picture below). It was delicious with the right amount of crunch on the crust and nice soft texture inside.
There were many other things I wanted to try but had a couple other bakeries to try 😛 so settled on the chocolate cinnamon scone and chocolate chip cookie. Both were very good with the right amount of sweetness and balanced texture.
Definitely will be making a return trip here on a future trip to Pittsburgh!
