Visited Prantl's this past week as I've done almost every trip to Pittsburgh the last couple years. Was in town visiting customers and my daughter who is graduating this month from Pitt! Prantl's has been in business for over 50 years and a bakery has existed at this location in the Shadyside section of Pittsburgh for over 100 years. They also have other locations downtown and in Greensburg, PA.
Prantl's makes a wide variety of cakes and pastries and is best known for their Burnt Almond Torte. Apparently this dessert is also made at other Pittsburgh area bakeries but think Prantl's is considered the best. Haven't tried it as I'm not much of an almond person but my daughter has enjoyed it many times and has brought it to other occasions.
Really like their donuts, cakes and breakfast style pastries. Their layer cakes are always fresh and the icing has just the right amount of sweetness. Last time I got their "super cinnamon" pastry which is kind of a cross between a muffin and cinnamon roll. They have other variations of this called a butter graham and maple nut graham that also look good.
